Let’s NOT Begin Again

We don't need to begin again on Mondays…

Yes, you read that correctly! Just because you may have enjoyed a couple extra glasses of vino, a couple slices of pizza from your favorite restaurant, or missed your workouts, that is okay.

Time and time again, I hear "I'll just start again on Monday". Which, is usually on a Saturday after a slice or two of the best pizza or cocktail. But, the thing is, why do we need to start again on Monday? What if we chose intentionally to nourish our bodies with nutrient-dense food a majority of the time, and treat our mind to foods that satisfy us like the slice of pizza or cocktail?

Society loves to shove down our throats the idea of "I'll start on Monday". When in fact, it doesn't matter what day you "start" or don't start. Our bodies are not designed to know the difference between eating a vegetable on a Saturday or eating a slice of cake on a Tuesday. Instead, our body looks at the breakdown of the macronutrients those food groups are providing us.

For example, when we eat a slice of cake, our body begins to digest immediately. Carbohydrates from the cake are broken down to glucose and processed through multiple pathways such as glycolysis, the TCA cycle, and then eventually create ATP. What is ATP? Our bodies energy! So, what happens when we eat a piece of whole-grain toast? the carbohydrate is broken down into glucose, enters glycolysis, the TCA cycle, and creates ATP!

But wait, those sounds very familiar.. almost exactly the same, right? Yep! Although the whole-wheat toast is broken down more slowly (hello, complex carbs!), they both end up creating energy for our body.

So, if our bodies do not realize what we are exactly eating, why would we expect them to know what day we are eating different foods? Just because you eat a stack of pancakes on a Monday, or drink a green juice on a Saturday, it doesn't make a difference to your body. What makes a difference is treating your body with the love and respect it deserves, 7-days a week.

Stay warm my friends!

xx,

Emily
